[After his first experience with memshare mechanics earlier in the day, Ogata had taken to trying to stay far away from other people. That meant being a shelf goblin, because surely that put him out of reach of the others, who didn't think to do such weird things.
But he forgot to account for Tsurumaru. Ogata is clambering up a shelf full of beach balls, when, as he pulls himself up, he locks eyes with the sword spirit;
The memory is from high up, in a wooden belltower, Ogata's rifle comfortably in his hands as he crouches in his perch. The hostage is being lead out in exchange for the tattooed skin, but there's something off about her. No. It's a fakeout, Ogata is sure of it. That isn't Hidoro's pregnant mistress at all. He's sure of it. So he lines up a shot, aiming right at that belly. And sure enough, when "she" falls it's only to reveal Nagakura Shinpachi beneath. Ogata chambers a fresh round and chuckles to himself, "I knew it was one of the old guys. Hidoro, the pathetic old bastard, reaches for the tattooed skin, laying forgotten on the ground, and Ogata plugs another shot into his outstretched hand for his trouble. He shouts at Umakichi, his employer, to go and grab the skin already. But then, just as Hidoro's men are about to fall to pieces in confusion, there he is. Hijikata Toshizo stands there, Izuminokami Kanesada in one hand, winchester rifle in the other, telling the men to rally under him or be killed. He's spectacular. Even in his advanced age, Ogata still thinks this is a man who truly lives up to the title of demon vice-commander. And whatever hell he came from, Ogata wants to get closer to it.]
[ sometimes, there are two shelf goblins and they choose the same shelf.
but that was... interesting. hijikata then? the sword is more recognizable to him, and tsurumaru considers the irony that he also has a gun in hand... well. time changes people, he supposes. ]
[Ogata settles a bit, because, well, at least it wasn't a particularly shocking memory. It could have been worse.]
It was. That was where I first met him. [He'd spent that entire mess of a situation trying to show off his best qualities so that Hijikata would hire him. For all the trouble, at least it had worked out in the end.]
I'd think a sword would like someone being cold and logical... Really, you're not anything like what I'd have expected a spirit of a sword to act like. The other one too.
Yes. Although I am not entirely sure if that's still the case while we're here...? But my sword and I are the same, so if anything happens to it, the same harm will come to this body.
Possibly. It has never happened while I have this form, so it's not like I have tested that specific scenario out. But if it gets damaged, I will as well.
[ ... ]
Of course, I would just kill anyone who tried, so it won't be an issue.

Rather cold. It's interesting, as swords tend to revere their masters, but the majority of his actively dislike him.
