[The precise meaning of the idiom goes over Ogata's head, but he has a general idea of what Wash means just based on the tone. And of course, it was exactly the reaction he expected. Ogata takes a long pause, leaning back against the wall of his cell where he's sat. Looking smug.]

Half the things we do in war would probably be considered "insane" if you did them anywhere else. What, exactly, is the difference? Just because you're acting on orders? Or because the enemy deserves it? No one ever calls the men who give the orders insane for sending thousands of men to their deaths, either. That's what I mean.

[It's a damn good thing Wash has had his back to Ogata for most of this conversation, because that means the second or two he winds up in a wide-eyed despondent stare at the wall would be invisible to Ogata.
