[He's spent the past two weeks studiously and purposefully ignoring the man in the cell next to him - the man he'd been jailed for apprehending. You'd think he would have learned his lesson about vigilante justice years ago, but...well, here he is.]
[Maybe it's because two weeks is too long. Maybe it's because he's going a little stir-crazy - the brig is a no-magic zone, which means no practice and no Athena. Maybe it's because he knows that half the Bureau is at a party tonight and he's stuck down here.]
[But he takes a breath, breaks the silence, and-]
So are you going as a sane person for Halloween, or is that too scary for you?
[dammit Wash]
no subject
Purely because he was bored, too. Instead he’d been stuck bothering Alex amd Lion over the network. And then Sayori, who gave him something else to do. It’s impossible to see what Ogata’s scribbling from Wash’s cell but it surely can’t be good.
Of course this all means when Wash initiates, Ogata ignores him for a solid 30 seconds before responding. He looks up, his face irritatingly nonplussed, at least on the surface.]
I don’t know what Halloween even is.

[He pauses for a moment when Ogata responds, partially because he's surprised he got an answer at all and partially because of the content of the response.]
...sucks to be you, I guess. Not getting the free candy holiday.
no subject
[There are worse things than candy, for sure. But he’s not going to go out of his way looking for it even if it is free.]
“Sane” is such a subjective term, though. How exactly are you supposed to make that a costume. That is what you meant, correct?
[“Sane is subjective” oh Ogata you could make a fortune designing t-shirts for hot topic.]
no subject
[There's a definite pause before he answers, though.]
'Sane is subjective?' Do you ever cut yourself on that edge?
[How do you establish basic tenets of sanity with a man who talks like that?]
[...probably not by antagonizing him, but still.]

You're a soldier, aren't you? You should understand.
[A guess. He has some sort of armor, a deep capacity for violence, and a dedication to Taking Care of Things by any means necessary. He seems like a career soldier to Ogata.]
Half the things we do in war would probably be considered "insane" if you did them anywhere else. What, exactly, is the difference? Just because you're acting on orders? Or because the enemy deserves it? No one ever calls the men who give the orders insane for sending thousands of men to their deaths, either. That's what I mean.

[It's a damn good thing Wash has had his back to Ogata for most of this conversation, because that means the second or two he winds up in a wide-eyed despondent stare at the wall would be invisible to Ogata. How does he keep winding up with these assholes in his life? How? Is there something about him that screams "I'm a former soldier who's adjusted relatively well to life outside of war, tell me your soldier problems?!"]
[This is what he fucking gets for getting involved, isn't it.]
[He can't entirely bite back the quiet "Jesus Christ" before he answers.]
The difference is, we're not at war! Context is pretty fucking important on that one.
You're either an idiot or a psychopath, and I'm pretty sure idiots don't kill their teammates on purpose.
[Ogata will never know about Caboose.]

It was one example. Broadly I'm saying situations affect people's perspective on these things.
Call me whatever you want. You're still stuck in here just like I am. If I'm crazy, what does that make you?
